Every year, during the festive Christmas season (Nov end – Dec), Munich transforms into a winter wonderland, complete with twinkling fairy lights, beautifully decorated Christmas trees and the aroma of roasted almonds and glühwein (hot mulled wine) filling the crisp air.
It was always my dream to visit Munich’s Christmas markets, and I made sure to fulfil that dream last year. With just over 2 days in Munich, I explored all the best Christmas markets that the city had to offer.
Dating to the Middle Ages, these vibrant, colorful marketplaces aren’t just great shopping destinations—they also provide rich insights into Bavarian culture, traditional crafts, regional delicacies, and centuries-old customs that continue to survive even today.
Although I have visited Munich several times, Christmas time is my favorite time to be here. And I hope it becomes your favorite too.

Top 6 Munich Christmas Markets
The tradition of Christmas markets, or Christkindlmärkte, dates back to the Late Middle Ages in the German-speaking parts of Europe. These were essentially gatherings where craftsmen and bakers would sell their wares during the weeks leading up to Christmas.
Munich embraced this tradition early, with its first documented Christmas market appearing sometime in the 14th century.

Here are some tips that helped me make the most of my Munich Christmas market trip.
For the most authentic experience, visit multiple Christmas markets like the ones listed here. If you’re doing multiple cities such as Nuremberg, Rothenburg ob der Tauber, and Berlin, even better.
Sign up for this amazing Christmas market tour with a local and enjoy festive food, wine, and stories.
If possible, visit in early December to experience the best balance of festive atmosphere and manageable crowds. This is also when the famous Krampus Run takes place (more on that below).
The final week before Christmas brings maximum energy and excitement, but also thicker crowds!
Here’s my pick for the Top 6 German Christmas markets to visit in Munich this year.
Munich Christkindlmarkt at Marienplatz
📍 Location: Marienplatz
📅 Dates: November 24 – December 24

Located in the center of Munich’s old town, the Christkindlmarkt at Marienplatz is one of Germany’s oldest Christmas markets. Dating back to the 14th century, this market, originally known as St. Nicholas Market, has witnessed centuries of Christmas celebrations and is one of the top places to visit in Munich during the winter season.
The market’s centerpiece is a huge, illuminated Christmas tree, which sets the festive tone for the entire city.
Traditional wooden stalls line the square, their red and white striped roofs creating a picture-perfect scene against the backdrop of the massive New Town Hall.
You must try the hand-baked stollen, as well as the fragrant Lebkuchen, and enjoy steaming mugs of Glühwein (mulled wine), served in souvenir mugs. You can return your mug or keep it as a memorable Christmas market souvenir for a small price. I have more than 10 mugs adorning my home now!
Don’t miss the Krampus Run, a fascinating pre-Christian tradition where costumed participants parade through the market streets. Dates vary each year, so please check the latest information on the official Christkindlmarkt website here.
If you’re traveling with your family, then you can sign up for Himmelswerkstatt (Heaven’s Workshop), which offers hands-on crafting sessions where your kids can create their own Christmas gifts under the guidance of local artisans. Spaces fill up fast.

Munich Residenz Christmas Village
📍 Location: Courtyard of the Residenz Palace
📅 Dates: November 17 – December 22

There are several reasons to visit the Munich Residenz (former Bavarian royal palace) – the Hall of Antiques, the Treasury, a gala concert in the Cuvilliés Theatre, and, of course, the Residenz Christmas Village.
This charming Christmas Village (Weihnachtsdorf) is situated in the courtyard of the Residenz and is a fun place to visit during the festive season.
The market is known for its traditional fairytale forest featuring Bavarian stories and Christmas tales, handicraft workshops (they have a wood carver from Tyrol this year!), and Bavarian nativity scenes.
Their mulled wine and homemade eggnogs are a must-try.
The cozy atmosphere of the Residenz transports visitors into a fairytale-like scene. The wooden stalls are decorated with nostalgic ornaments and Bavarian motifs, which add to the festive spirit.
If you’re visiting on the last day (aka Dec 22), then you can take away the Christmas tree decor free of charge. For more information, please visit their official website here.

Sendlinger Tor Christmas Market
📍 Location: Sendlinger Tor
📅 Dates: November 24 – December 22 (closed on Mondays and Tuesdays)

Just outside the medieval gate of Sendlinger Tor, this Christmas market dates back to the late 19th century and offers a quieter, more international vibe.
You’ll find a mix of international crafts (Latvian ceramics are always in high demand), dreamcatchers, wooden crafts, Christmas decorations, and plenty of warming treats, such as waffles, bratwurst, chocolate-coated fruits, and candy apples.
It’s a great place to shop for unique gifts and sample festive delicacies from around the world.

Located just a few minutes from the Marienplatz, Rindermarkt feels like an extension of the Christkindlmarkt. It is a cozy little market with a tall Christmas pyramid filled with stalls selling everything from glühwein to crepes.

Christmas Market at the Chinese Tower in Englischer Garden
📍 Location: Englischer Garten
📅 Dates: November 26 – December 21

Located deep within the English Garden, beneath its famous Chinese pagoda, Munich’s Chinese Tower Market boasts one of the most unique Christmas market settings.
I found the walk through the garden to get to the Christmas market a little too dark since the entire garden was not lit. However, once we arrived, the atmosphere was quite festive.
Pick up some hot chestnuts, roasted almonds or gingerbread cookies and explore stalls offering handmade candles, jewelry, Christmas decorations, and knitted stuff.
This beautiful Munich Christmas market also features a curling rink, perfect for enjoying with friends and family. For kids, there’s a wooden carousel, and adults can enjoy Christmas melodies by the tower band. Check out the details here.
If you’re looking for a break from the crowds, this is the perfect place to enjoy a peaceful cup of mulled wine surrounded by nature.
Viktualienmarkt
📍 Location: Viktualienmarkt
📅 Dates: Coming soon (closed on Sundays)

Not the usual German Christmas market, the Viktualienmarkt is Munich’s open-air food market, which gets a magical makeover during the festive season.
This Christmas market is a dream come true for foodies.
This market has been the heart of Munich’s food culture for over 200 years. During the Christmas season, it showcases the finest Bavarian cuisine.
Local producers offer seasonal specialties like Lebkuchen, various types of sausages, roasted chestnuts, and regional wines. The regular gourmet vendors are joined by seasonal stalls offering gingerbread hearts, and artisan cheeses.
Located just steps from Marienplatz, this is the ideal spot to combine Christmas shopping with gourmet snacking and warm holiday cheer. Don’t miss the nativity scene in the beer garden and, of course, the mulled wine.
