- Many of Berlin’s markets are open on Christmas Day and into the New Year, with a few extending through New Year’s Day.
This is especially helpful if you’re visiting Germany for the Christmas holidays and plan to be in the country till the New Year. You can spend the first few days in Bavaria, visiting the markets of Munich, Nuremberg, and Rothenburg, and end the trip in Berlin.

Alexanderplatz Christmas Market

The Christmas market at Alexanderplatz, beneath the iconic TV Tower, is one of Berlin’s most popular Christmas markets.
This market features a giant Christmas pyramid that doubles as a mulled wine joint and snack bar. There are over 50 stalls selling everything from handcrafted ornaments to steaming bratwurst.
There are nostalgic carousels for children as well as a roller-skating rink.

Berliner Weihnachtszeit at Rotes Rathaus

Location: Rotes Rathaus
Dates: November 24 – December 30

Just 5 minutes away from Alexanderplatz is the nice and cozy Berlin Christmas market at Rotes Rathaus.
I love this one more than the one at Alexanderplatz because there are so many different kinds of food stalls here. Plus, there’s a small ice ring and a huge Ferris wheel here.

Gendarmenmarkt Christmas Market (WeihnachtsZauber)

Location: Gendarmenmarkt

Located in one of Berlin’s most historic squares, WeihnachtsZauber boasts a beautiful setting, framed by the stunning French and German Cathedrals.

Palace and Garden Christmas Markets in Berlin
Schloss Charlottenburg Christmas Market

Location: Charlottenburg Palace
Dates: November 24 – December 28

The Schloss Charlottenburg Christmas Market in Berlin is one of my favorites. Just the regal setting of this Christmas market against the beautiful baroque architecture of Charlottenburg Palace makes it so special.
The palace gardens transform into a winter wonderland where you can explore festive stalls and catch a brilliant light and sound show.
There are a couple of nostalgic carousels and a Ferris wheel. Plus, two heated tent restaurants that serve some of the most delicious German food.
Honestly, this is like the coziest Christmas market I’ve experienced in Germany.
The palace also offers guided tours (only in German, though), where you learn about Berlin’s festive traditions and Christmas celebrations in the royal family. Find details here.

Christmas Garden Berlin

Berlin’s Christmas Garden is a truly unique experience and a must-see when visiting Germany in winter.
It is not your usual Christmas market but a beautiful 1-mile trail of elaborate light installations, musical fountains, and illuminated displays. Although a little pricey, this 1-mile walk is absolutely worth all the money.
Buy your ticket online and enter the garden at the designated time. The self-guided tour through all the light displays lasts 1.5 hours.

Christmas in Tierpark
Location: Tierpark
Dates: November 21 – January 10

The Tierpark (a zoo in Berlin) hosts yet another magical Christmas garden experience from November to January.
Over 1.25 miles of trails are adorned with stunning light displays and illuminations, transporting you to a winter wonderland. These are the second-largest light installations in Berlin after the Christmas Garden mentioned above.

Finnish Advent Bazaar
Location: Passionskirche in Kreuzberg
